Open PhD student position

July 19th, 2023

A PhD opportunity with a FAPESP Scholarship is now available within the Lab of Advanced MRI (LOAM) at the Institute of Physics Gleb Wataghin of the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), located in Campinas, SP, Brazil. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in cutting-edge magnetic resonance imaging research.

For this scholarship, the student will work on developing methods for acquiring and processing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, with the goal of mapping brain clearance mechanisms and understanding the functioning of the glymphatic system. It is anticipated that, by the end of the doctoral program, the student will have gained extensive knowledge of MRI physics, image processing, and the relationship between blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid in impurity clearance and glymphatic system function.

The project will be conducted within a multidisciplinary team of physicists and clinician in a collaboration with the Clinical Hospital of UNICAMP, where we will utilize a 3T Philips Ingenia scanner and a 7T Bruker preclinical scanner, both equipped with development tools for pulse programming.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a sufficient physics background to be admitted to the Physics Graduate Program. Desired skills include motivation and interest in developing MRI pulse sequences to address complex questions and previous experience in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, Matlab, Julia, C++). While previous knowledge in MRI physics or image processing is not mandatory, it will be considered a plus.

About the scholarship: FAPESP is the most highly regarded funding agency in Brazil. The monthly scholarship stipend is 3,694.80 Brazilian Reais, plus a technical reserve to support meeting participation or cover any necessary work materials.

About Campinas: Campinas is a large city located 90 km from São Paulo. The city offers peaceful living environments, culinary diversity, numerous shopping malls, and a variety of leisure activities. UNICAMP is located in the neighborhood of Barão Geraldo, where you can find everything you will need, as accommodation, supermarkets, bus stop, etc.. Cost of living will depend on the kind of accommodation that you are looking for. Shared apartment expenses are usually around 800 - 1200 BRL. Read more about Campinas.
